2025 Investment Year in Review and 2026 Outlook

As we close out 2025, investors find themselves in the kind of environment we all hope for but rarely experience. Global equity markets delivered exceptionally strong results while fixed income preserved capital and reduced volatility exactly as intended. From a long-term planning perspective, this is ideal—strong returns spread across diversified portfolios create exactly the environment disciplined investors are positioned to benefit from. This year's success reinforces a fundamental truth: strong markets reveal whether your investment philosophy is sound, while weak markets reveal whether you truly believe it. Markets spent considerable time at all-time highs, reminding us that this is precisely what we should expect from asset classes with positive long-term returns. The question isn't "how long will this last?" but rather "is my portfolio still aligned with my goals?"—and for disciplined investors, the answer continues to point toward staying the course.

Personal Financial Goals vs. Market Benchmarks: Why Your Investment Strategy Needs a Different Scorecard

Comparing your portfolio to market indices like the S&P 500 might seem like the right way to measure success, but it's actually a distraction from what truly matters. Here's the problem: the definition of "the market" constantly shifts based on whatever's performing best at the moment. Over the last decade, it's been U.S. stocks. Before that, Canadian stocks led the way. This moving target makes for a poor benchmark because unless your goals, timeline, and risk tolerance perfectly match that shifting definition, the comparison tells you very little about your actual progress. The only benchmark that counts is whether you're on track to meet your personal financial goals—like retiring when you want to, funding the experiences that matter most, and having the flexibility to enjoy life without financial stress. This is what we call tracking error regret: that uneasy feeling that you're "falling behind" when your portfolio doesn't mirror an index or match your neighbor's success story. When you chase someone else's scorecard, you risk making changes that feel smart in the moment but work against your long-term plan. Remember, you can beat an index but still fail to meet your financial goals. The real question isn't how you're doing compared to the market—it's whether your money is helping you live the life you've planned for.

Betting on the Markets Being Wrong – Don’t Take Those Odds

A common refrain in investing is that news and expectations are already "priced in”. I often say this publicly and in individual client meetings. When clients are concerned about changes in the market and want to act on what they are hearing, I remind them that the market is ahead of the media rumblings and that snap financial decisions tend to sabotage positive financial outcomes. So, it is much better to hold firm with your investment strategy, that should be based on a sound financial plan, rather than reactively sell, because those who react are most likely reacting too late. And I’m not just guessing. I’m advising based on my experience and deep understanding of how markets work. The reality is that those who stay disciplined see much better performance than those who try to bet on market mispricing and make changes.

Timeless Financial Tips #1: Repeat After Me: “It’s Already Priced In”

A key concern many investors have at the moment is the impact of Trump's tariffs on goods produced outside the U.S. on the markets. I'm hearing from those wondering if they should sell quickly to protect their wealth; their primary question is: What should I do with my investments? My answer (as it usually is when investors are concerned about the geopolitical impact on the markets): Stick with the plan because, by the time you become concerned, the markets have already pre-adjusted (i.e. it's priced in), so any reaction you take is too late.

2023 Financial Year in Review | 2024 Investment Market Outlook

You might assume, the more experienced a financial professional is, the more accurate they can be with their year-end forecasts. Personally, I’ve never tried to predict which hot or cold stocks, bonds, sectors, or market sentiments to chase or flee each year. Instead, the more experience I’ve gained, the more firmly I believe in the Timeless Financial Tips I shared throughout 2023. For me, they serve as the best guide for “predicting” what investors should expect in 2024. So, considering everything I’ve learned in 2023 (plus the quarter-century prior), I predict … We cannot possibly predict how 2024 markets will perform. That’s my expert forecast, and I’m sticking to it. I will, however, add one more prediction, about which I am nearly as certain … Over time (think multiple years), capital markets WILL deliver positive returns to those who consistently participate in their expected growth.

Play It Again, Steve – Timeless Financial Tips #2: Rising Above the Noisy News

In investing and life, information overload, aka “noisy news,” has long been a thing. In fact, before the Internet came along, I used to publish a hardcopy newsletter called “Rising Above the Noise.” Because even then, investors seemed awash in TMI (too much information). If media noise was a problem back then, imagine the implications today. Which brings me to today’s Play It Again, Steve – Timeless Financial Tip #2. To be a successful investor, it’s as important as ever to dial down all the noisy news you invite into your head.

This Is Your Investment Brain on Pessimism

Have you been reading the headlines, viewing your investment portfolio, and assuming the worst is yet to come? Welcome to your painful crash course on what market risk really looks like—and more importantly, how it feels. Most investors say they’re ok living with periodic market risk, as long as it helps them achieve better returns over the long run. We accept (in theory) that tolerating the interim damage done to our own investment portfolios will help us meet our long-term financial goals. But that’s investment risk in theory. Since it’s been a long time since we’ve encountered an extended bear market climate, you may have forgotten or never known the reality of it. It may not have clicked then, when significant market declines happen, it is usually due to despairingly bad news … amplified by headlines screaming how things are only going to get worse from here. The reality is, when we’re in the middle of a storm of stuff, our behavioural biases make it very difficult to believe we’ll ever see better days.
